  17. <p>    "The harm you are doing by espousing the `pro-choice' view
  18. will require great efforts to repair," San Diego Bishop Leo
  19. Maher wrote last week to Lucy Killea, 67, a Democrat running in
  20. a special election for California's state senate. He then
  21. applied a little used sanction that denies Communion to
  22. Catholics who "obstinately persist in manifest grave sin."
  23. Killea says she will abide by the decree but will not change her
  24. position. She is the first political candidate to receive this
  25. censure.

  27. <p>    Catholics who take pro-choice stands have been particularly
  28. frustrating to the nation's bishops, who have been asked to
  29. respond decisively to dissenters. But a spokesman said it is
  30. highly unlikely that Maher's precedent would become national
  31. Catholic policy.
